This Georgian-style home was built in 1835 by a wealthy Augusta
merchant and remodeled in 1885, when parlor mantles, parquet floors,
hand-tooled leather wall coverings, and leaded and stained glass
windows were added. A few years later, a fourth floor was built and a
pulley-type elevator was installed. In 1933, the house passed out of
residential use and hosted a variety of businesses and clubs. The
current owner, William G. Hatcher, has initiated extensive renovations
that attempt to salvage as much of the original interior as possible.
To date, the exterior, the interior of one floor, and the elevator
have been completely refurbished, and throughout the house original
floorings, wall coverings, chandeliers, and mirrors have been
conserved.
Weather permitting, we hope our guests will be able to enjoy the
lighted gazebos, swing, and benches in the Hatcher Center's
courtyards.
As a student of nineteenth-century literature and culture, Lee Anna
fell in love with the Hatcher Center, and she's been trying to
determine a way she and Reggie can live there (they need live-in
caretakers, right?).
